About this deal

Or just take a plunge into an abyss… However you travel, hold on tight, because this book is a ride! I loved the fact that she was fearless and so very sarcastic yet adorably awkward when it came to showing any kind of affection.

Long-legged Liam makes a giant leap for boy-kind by competing with a group of adults for the chance to go into space. What’s wonderful about this is, although it’s a brutally harsh environment it remains a child- (and gecko-)centric story.Otherwise, this is a fun read, lots of chases, escaping the baddies and saving the planet, aimed at middle grade readers. Alors oui, c’est un mix entre Wall-E et Star Wars, mais ça n’a pas suffit pour me donner envie de continuer ma lecture jusqu’au bout. Really packed with plenty of fun, this fast moving story will keep the reader gripped as Railey and bio-robotic gecko friend Atti are forced to flee skywards. In this world junk has overtaken the world so much, it’s had to be taken out to space-which causes some unexpected dangers. Set in a future where junk orbits the Earth and the privileged have moved to a vast Glass City, the book follows Railey and her pet gecko, Atti.

Railey is a fantastic, gutsy, impulsive character whose quick tongue often gets her into trouble, and her skill as an engineer does a great service to encouraging women and girls with an interest in STEM subjects. Loved the steampunk, junkpile feel of this book, the ingenuity of the characters building with this junk and the message of the importance of waste reduction and taking responsibility for our waste before it engulfs us. Loved this book - gripped me from start to finish and has an interesting slant on what humans do with their rubbish and what could happen in a dystopian future. Back on the wasteland of Earth, engineer Railey and her bio-robotic gecko Atti dream of winning the drone races in dusty Boxville – but when a terrifying bounty hunter hijacks their race to look for them, they’re forced to hide in the rubbish-filled atmosphere above. Care was absolutely wonderful as a secondary character, as was Laurie, and I defy anyone not to adore Tring, who is an AI NannyBot.

There are heart-in-throat moments, and, thanks to Gemma’s incredibly visual writing (I felt like I was watching a film throughout), it feels urgent and real. I was drawn to City of Rust right away because of the characterful futuristic steam-punk junk yard vibe, and because it’s a sci-fi.No sooner have they escaped the bounty hunter, they have a bigger problem on their hands – hiding from the fearsome Junker gang who are hell-bent on firing a colossal trash-bomb back towards Earth.
