About this deal

To put it in context - I am ex Army Air Corps and have served all over the world in various roles including aircrew, and have worn all manner of boots, both issued and privately purchased. This is partly explained by the fact that the Pilgrim MK2 is already an older version of the model, and this is due to the fact that is explained in the next chapter.

Above the IMS midsole is a layer of high-density EVA, this protects the user from loading forces particularly when carrying heavy packs and provides a layer of protective support for foot rather than it resting on a hard material. It is clear that someone with a wider foot or higher instep would find no problem with the instep fit of the boot, or of having long enough laces to tie them comfortably. This DS or Desert variant of the boot is without a full Gore-Tex lining which offers more effective cooling of the feet. Its sleek and stylish black design exudes a professional and tactical look, suitable for any mission or adventure.Even thought the Pilgrims were a terrific boots for the job in every way, the 6″ high enough to keep my ankle from rolling and the whole construction was like a body armour for my feet, the humidity of the air and the Gore-Tex left my feet the tiniest bit moist after long day of doing “soldierish” stuff.

I do have a narrow foot so it was gratifying to see that the standard width fitting was able to accommodate me comfortably. The boot upper features the advanced AKU AIR 8000® system which remains one of the most advanced technologies, ensuring abrasion resistance and excellent breathability up to 11. The AKU Pilgrim GTX was selected to be the most suitable for lightweight patrolling and high intensity combat situations, on a variety of surfaces including rock, rubble, field and track. But in essence the boots are still the same however, and now free for everyone to purchase from AKU dealers too!The Pilgrim DS combat desert boot is also popular with special forces units and the Pilgrim range of boots are becoming ever more popular with the police and security services. These boots are incredibly light weight and form fitting, definitely worth using if prone to blisters as I have had no issues unlike previous use with altbergs and hiax combat boots. I cannot vouch for the quality of boots produced inside that contract, especially with regards to the significant drop in quality experienced with the Altberg Boots. Since then the AKU Pilgrim GTX has been selected as the UK Armed Forces combat boot with the Pilgrim ankle boot also popular with the British Army and Armed Forces.

With an IMS 3D midsole the foot is cradled in a relaxed position, therefore, reducing fatigue and minimising foot movement. The official MOD version of the renowned AKU Pilgrim with improved breathability and drying thanks to the new Gore-Tex Performance Lining with a perforated EVA interlining. The padded collar on the boot is lined with a wicking fabric to help dispel heat and moisture from inside the boot. The main the body of the boot is made of panels of 2,0mm thick AIR 8000® fabric with a micro dot net glued Gore-Tex lining. The fabric is highly breathable and the gluing method used whith the lining is said to enhance breathability and the structural integrity of the membrane.

Crafted with precision and built to last, the Pilgrim GTX combines cutting-edge technology with AKU's renowned Italian craftsmanship. It was around the time when my second pair of Salomon mid length boots fell apart after about a year of use that I decided that my next pair of boots would not do that. Kit Pest is a dedicated team of serving and ex-serving men and women dedicated to making military life a more positive experience. Right away they were very soft and comfortable, with the exception of the ankle collar which was very stiff, and will need wearing in.

As far as NFCI issues go, leather boots wet out too and present the same or worse risk as they take longer to dry – where I now work it’s not uncommon to be stood at the top of a Lakeland pass in feet of snow, stopping traffic from passing, or in town dealing with flooding – never had a problem. My feet tend to sweat quite a bit and boots that do not breathe well tend to be very uncomfortable for me after a while. Below the IMS midsole is a thicker layer of high-density EVA which absorbs impact forces from the ground. A wrap-around and anatomical fit for footwear in the Trekking segment, designed to provide stability and encourage a dynamic action when walking on mountain trails over very rough terrain.
