Is Case Study ambitious and original enough to win the Booker Prize? Not so sure but I am glad it made it to the longlist, otherwise I might not have heard of it. Once one has thrown off the idea of a ‘hierarchy of selves’ one can happily be whoever one wants, whenever ones wants.

But despite Case Study’s humor, Burnet also manages to incorporate some genuinely affecting, sad, and thought-provoking elements. A. Collins Braithwaite may be a dangerous buffoon, but he also tosses away his potential and self-destructs. “Rebecca Smyth” may be comical with her overwrought sibling rivalry, but her eventual merger with and domination of her host is genuinely creepy.
